You can take the boy out of the shtetl , but you can't take the shtetl out of the boy.

In the opening scene of Fiddler on the Roof a villager in Anatevka says to Nachum the Beggar, “Here, Reb Nachum, here’s one kopek.”  Nachum responds, “One kopek?  Last week you gave me two kopeks!”  The villager tells the beggar, “I had a bad week.”  And Nachum says, 
“So? If you had a bad week, why should I suffer?”
